Don’t get us wrong, we love to let someone else do the work for us from time to time, but making healthy green smoothies at home is a super easy part of your healthy eating routine. Just make sure you have a few essential ingredients on hand (here are 10 3-ingredient smoothies to inspire you), follow this green smoothie formula, and mix and match the flavors to your liking. So easy! (PS: you will hardly taste the vegetables).

Foolproof Green Smoothie Formula

1. Start with 1 cup of liquid

Choose from:

  • Coconut, almond or other non-dairy milk (learn how to make it here) or kefir
  • chilled herbal tea
  • water or coconut water
  • Fresh squeezed juice (stick to vegetables if possible, think carrot or a combination of celery and apple)

2. Add 1 1/2 cups of vegetables

Use any combination of:

  • Spinach
  • cabbage
  • Parsley
  • chard

3. Add 1/2 to 1 cup of fresh or frozen fruit for added sweetness and nutrients

Frozen fruit (especially bananas) will add a great creamy texture and make your smoothie more milkshake-like. Keep in mind that you may need more fluid if you go that route. Any ideas:

For a boost of vitamin K and potassium: stone fruits such as peaches, plums, apricot cherries, or nectarines (pitted, of course)

for extra fiber: raspberries, avocados, pears, apples, bananas

For an immune and antioxidant boost.: fresh peeled orange or grapefruit, blueberries, strawberries

For extra omega-3s (and to keep it low carb): raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, avocado, guava

4. Extras that stimulate nutrition

These aren’t necessary, but can be a nice touch:

to add protein: 1 tablespoon bee pollen, nut butter, raw almonds (preferably soaked), or pumpkin seeds

To detoxify and stimulate metabolism.: 1 teaspoon ground turmeric, cinnamon or grated fresh ginger or fresh herbs like mint or basil

for extra fiber: 2 tablespoons chia seeds or chopped dates

For omega-3: 2 tablespoons raw walnuts or oil/linseed

5. Sweeten if desired (optional)

  • Liquid Stevia (SweetLeaf is our favorite because it comes in so many flavors)
  • 1 teaspoon of raw honey (try in infusion)
  • Extra banana (the riper the better) or dates to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon agave syrup

To start, this is one of our favorite green smoothies. It has naturally sweet oranges for a vitamin C-rich immune booster, protein-rich spinach, and a nice, subtle minty finish. Use frozen banana to thicken!

Easy Green Smoothie: Raspberry Orange

  • 1 1/2 cups coconut water or coconut water kefir
  • 1 cup of spinach + 1/2 cup of parsley
  • 1 orange without skin + 1/2 banana
  • 5 mint leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Mix and enjoy your food!
