Tips for making homemade waffles

Here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind when making your own series of homemade buttermilk waffles. They will come out perfectly every time!

  • Measure the flour: Usually the main culprit for dry waffles is that too much flour has been added to them. Be sure to measure and level the flour to get the perfect ratio of buttermilk to flour.
  • Don’t over mix: I know, I know, it’s tempting to want to mix the batter until it’s completely smooth. But by doing so, you may be causing gluten to develop, which will leave you with thick, hard waffles. Stir just until ingredients are incorporated. It’s okay if there are a few lumps left.
  • Keep your waffle maker closed: Opening your waffle maker before the cooking time is up will release all the hot air needed to fully cook your waffle maker.
  • Underfill: It is better to slightly overfill the waffle maker than to add too much batter and make a mess. You need less dough than you think, as it will expand as it cooks.
