Sloppy Joes Cheeseburger Recipe

Sloppy Joes are my favorite dinner at home. My last ones are these cheeseburgers and they are great.

Just like a cheeseburger, but instead it’s made with perfectly seasoned ground beef and has the addition of mustard and dill pickles for that classic cheeseburger flavor. Anytime I can make something that is “hamburger” or “cheeseburger,” all my kids get involved. So hamburger soup or these Cheeseburger Cookie Cups.

Ingredients needed

These are the ingredients you will need to make this recipe. I also share some tips so you can be successful when recreating it in your kitchen.

  • Olive oil – Any cooking oil will work for this. The oil is necessary to brown and soften the chopped onion. I use ‘light flavor’ extra virgin olive oil. Regular olive oil can have a very strong flavor, so I avoid it for most dishes.
  • Finely Chopped White Onion
  • Ground beef – Use 93/7 or 96/4. Any percentage of fat will work because you will still drain excess fat/moisture.
  • Salt and pepper
  • Garlic clove – You can use a freshly minced or squeezed clove of garlic. Garlic paste from a tube (this is what I use) or use minced garlic from a jar.
  • Ketchup
  • Chopped dill pickles
  • Mustard
  • pickle juice – Take some from the pickle jar.
  • English sauce
  • light brown sugar
  • hamburger bun
  • sliced american cheese – I use the Kraft brand of American melted cheese. You can only use sliced cheese but to replicate that cheeseburger I recommend using American cheese because it melts better and replicates a cheeseburger better.

  • Onion : Cook onion in oil until lightly browned, soft and translucent in color. This should take around 3-4 minutes.
  • Ground beef : Add the ground beef along with the salt, pepper, and garlic. Cook and crumble until meat is no longer pink. Drain excess fat from skillet.
  • Cheeseburger time: Add the other ingredients and mix. Let it simmer for about 5-10 minutes, reducing the heat if necessary, until it thickens.
  • Toasted Sandwiches: Spread soft butter on each side of the burger buns. Place them on a baking tray. Grill for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and toasted. Place a wedge of American cheese on top of each bun and grill for about 1 additional minute until melted.
  • Serve : Spoon a tablespoon of sloppy cheeseburger mixture onto each bottom bun then top with a cheese bun. To a good time!

tips for success

Here are some of my helpful tips that will hopefully help you make this recipe for your family successful.

  • Simmer: It is important to let the meat simmer for at least 5-10 minutes. If it boils, splatters, and gets too hot, just reduce the heat to medium-low for the boiling time. During the boiling time, the flavors will meld and the sloppy joe mixture will thicken.
  • Toasted Sandwiches: I would say this step can be optional, but I recommend toasting the sandwiches and melting the cheese. It’s what will give these sloppy joes that classic cheeseburger flavor. The meat should still be simmering so you have time to toast the sandwiches.
  • Use American cheese: For the best gooey, melted cheese results, be sure to use melted American cheese. I use Kraft brand singles that are individually wrapped in that plastic. Yes, you can use sliced cheese but it won’t melt as well and definitely won’t be as gooey.

Sloppy Joes FAQs

  • How to Store Leftover Sloppy Joe’s Meat
    • Leftover cheeseburger meat can be stored in the refrigerator, in an airtight container, for up to 3 days. When reheating meat to eat again, use microwave or skillet and heat until heated through.
    • I also recommend adding just a little bit of water to moisten the meat. After being in the refrigerator, the meat will dry out and lose moisture.
  • Can I Freeze Joe’s Sloppy Beef?
    • Yes, you can freeze it! Cook the sloppy meat as directed in the recipe and allow it to cool slightly to hot room temperature. Place the meat in a freezer-safe container or ziplock bag and freeze for up to 3 months.
    • Let it thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating it in a skillet on the stove.
    • Add a little water or beef broth to moisten it again during heating.
  • Can I do it in advance?
    • I recommend preparing it immediately before serving. It’s a quick 30-minute dinner recipe, so it’s easy to throw together just before dinner time.
    • If you do this too soon, the meat will likely dry out due to the longer cooking time.
    • They are best served and eaten right after they are made.

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • White onion finely chopped
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 clove garlic
  • ½ cup tomato sauce
  • ¼ cup chopped dill pickles
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 2 teaspoons pickle juice (from pickle jar)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon light brown sugar

Toasted Sandwiches

  • 6 hamburger buns
  • 6 slices of American cheese (I use Kraft placemats)
  • spreadable/soft butter
  • In a skillet, over medium-high heat, add the oil and the chopped onion. Cook until soft and slightly translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add ground beef, kosher salt, black pepper, and garlic. Cook and crumble until ground meat is no longer pink. Drain excess fat/moisture from pan.
  • Add ketchup, chopped pickles, mustard, pickle juice, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar. Stir to combine.
  • Simmer for about 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, so the flavors develop and any extra liquid/sauce can thicken. * Lower heat as needed
  • While the meat simmers, toast the burger buns. Place both sides of the burger buns on a baking sheet. Spread a little butter on each of them. Grill until lightly browned and browned, about 2-3 minutes. Place a wedge of American cheese on each top side of the burger bun and cook again for about 1 minute or until cheese is melted.
  • Spoon a dollop of sloppy cheeseburger mixture on each bottom bun then place a cheese bun on top.

Mince : Feel free to swap the ground beef with ground turkey for a healthier recipe.
Olive oil : Regular olive oil has a very intense flavor, so I always use “light flavor” extra virgin olive oil whenever a recipe calls for olive oil. It is a much more neutral flavor oil. You can also use canola or vegetable oil, or any other cooking oil you prefer instead of olive oil.
Garlic : Use a fresh clove of garlic that has been minced or squeezed. Garlic paste from a tube. Use minced garlic from a jar. Any of them will work fine.
Toasted Burger Sandwiches: This is an optional step, but I highly recommend doing it. The toasted sandwich with melted cheese on top makes these sloppy joes really great. I just use butter spread from a plastic container. Feel free to use whatever spreadable or smooth butter you prefer. Margarine from a tube will also work great.
