Chocolate Kumquat Scones » Simple and Healthy Recipe! ✅

While I am a big fan of savory breakfast scones, there is something luxurious about citrus and chocolate. As with all of my scone recipes, you can just make the dough and bake it right away. Or you can freeze the dough and bake it straight from the freezer in the morning, which means you’ll have a warm, nicely browned scone oozing with dark chocolate with your morning coffee. —Vicky | things i did today

  • 6 ounces (about 24) kumquats, thinly sliced and seeded

  • 1/4 cup 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes

  • 1 egg

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

  • 1/4 cup bittersweet chocolate, chopped

  1. Preheat oven to 325F.

  2. Season the sliced kumquats with 1 tablespoon of sugar. Place a single layer on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Let it cool down completely.

  3. Bring oven temperature to 375F.

  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, ¼ cup sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the cooled kumquats, butter, egg, and cream. Stir until the dough begins to mix. Add the chocolate and mix for a couple more seconds.

  5. Shape dough into a 6-inch round disk. Cut into 6 wedges and transfer to a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Cook for 30 minutes until golden brown.

  6. Alternatively, you can freeze the dough before cooking. Bake straight from the freezer for 35-40 minutes, until golden brown.
