Hormonal Rebalancing Hot Chocolate with Cocoa, Chia + Maca » Simple and Healthy Recipe! ✅

As soon as the temperature drops and the rainy days seem endless, that’s when warm, comforting beverages make their delicious entrance into my kitchen. There’s nothing like coming home from a long walk in the rain or a busy day at the office and drinking a cup of creamy hot chocolate to warm up and perk you up.

How to make a hormone-balancing hot chocolate

While I love a classic cup of hot chocolate, my struggles with hormonal imbalance have made me seek out vegan versions. Many of the conventional milk and milk products are loaded with hormones, antibiotics, pesticides [source]and steroids [source] and they are definitely something to get rid of if you are dealing with hormonal issues. For my hot chocolate recipes I always choose a rich non-dairy milk and almond milk is definitely my favourite.

There are four ingredients that I love to add to my hot chocolate for a luscious, creamy texture and delicious flavor, but that also makes it true medicine.

raw cocoa powder

Heralded as the “Food of the Gods,” cocoa is rich in beneficial compounds that affect many bodily functions [source]. It is a great source of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. [source] as well as essential minerals and trace elements, especially magnesium [source]which can help balance mood swings [source].

maca powder

Known as Peruvian ginseng, this plant related to radish has long been used to promote sexual function and chronic fatigue syndrome. For its high content of minerals and vitamins, especially iron, magnesium and complex B [source]maca can help balance hormones.

Plus, the natural sugars in maca help give hot chocolate a delicious flavor. As you enjoy this tasty beverage, the rich nutrient profile of maca powder will work to increase libido and fertility, balance hormone levels, and relieve PMS. [source].

lucuma powder

Gold of the Incas, lucuma has a delicious maple syrup flavor that lends a subtle sweetness to everything included. Rich in beta-carotene, vitamin B, vitamin C, iron, calcium and other trace elements, lucuma is an excellent natural energizer, gives vitality and helps with depression.

chia seeds

An excellent source of soluble fiber and vegetable protein, chia seeds turn into a gelatinous mass and absorb excess toxins and estrogens, eliminating them and preventing them from escaping into the bloodstream.

These four ingredients make up a delicious elixir for hormonal balance and mood enhancement, making this hot chocolate the perfect treat for those days when the sun never seems to peep out on your face.

How to make healthy hot chocolate

Turning your favorite winter drink into a health booster is really something to consider, especially if you drink it frequently. Here are some tricks to help you enjoy your hot chocolate whenever you want:

reduce sugars – Most hot chocolate mixes are loaded with refined sugar, which leads to inflammation and hormonal disruption. Consider adding pure maple syrup or just use a date or two to sweeten your hot chocolate.

choose raw – Ingredients such as raw cocoa powder retain more nutrients than conventional cocoa powder. Magnesium, antioxidants, protein, and fiber – all of these nutrients involved in detoxification are found in just one tablespoon of raw cocoa powder.

go plant based – Cow’s milk and other dairy products are often linked to inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. [source] like acne [source]Diabetes type 1 [source]and rheumatoid arthritis [source]. Although they have valuable nutrients, they also contain animal fats and proteins. So if you want to reduce inflammation in your system, choose plants!

Consider choosing a plant-based milk alternative for a healthier hot chocolate. Our favorite is almond milk, but oatmeal or cashews are great too. Choose a sugar-free version as it will add a healthy sweetener to the mix depending on your taste.

choose your superfood – adding superfoods, spices and adaptogens to your hot chocolate will increase its nutritional load. For a more balanced hormonal production, choose maca or lucuma.

To boost immunity, choose reishi [source]. Add lion’s mane to improve brain activity and mood [source]or reduce inflammation with chaga [source]. A simple cinnamon powder reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases [source]while powdered ginger revives hot chocolate and improves digestion.

add fiber – A teaspoon of ground chia or flaxseeds will naturally thicken the hot chocolate by adding healthy fats and also contribute to natural detoxification and better digestion.
