Oh the avocado. With its creamy, buttery texture and nutty flavor, the popularity of this fruit (yes, it’s technically a fruit, not a vegetable) has skyrocketed in recent decades.

And with good reason.

Dubbed by the Washington Post in 2015 as “America’s New Favorite Fruit,” avocados are not only delicious, but also nutrient-dense, heart-healthy, and may even help prevent cancer.

From the infamous millennial “Avocado Toast” to dark chocolate truffles, this little nugget of gold is popping up everywhere.

But just like the stock market, with avocados, timing is everything, and keeping avocados fresh at home can be particularly tricky.

If you’re an avocado lover, then you know the exhilaration of cutting into a perfectly ripe avocado, the devastating bitterness (literally and figuratively) of jumping the gun, and the defeat you feel when you think you’ve found the perfect specimen only to discover the soft flesh and stringy brown on the inside because it waited a day too long.

So how do you keep your avocados fresh? In times of desperation, people turn to the community, and the internet is full of advice on how to work with this picky fruit, but it’s not always good (or safe).

Sign in to Tik Tok. An online personality claimed to have finally discovered the secret to keeping avocados fresh by storing them soaked in cold water in the refrigerator. She insisted that this trick would keep them fresh for up to a month. Onlookers watched her slice open an avocado that she had stored like this for weeks, revealing the bright green flesh inside.

The crowd went wild and the TikTok avocado hack officially went viral. Then the FDA stepped in.

Turns out this viral hack for keeping avocados fresh isn’t as easy and safe as it sounds.

“The FDA does not recommend this practice,” they told Newsweek. “The main concern is the possibility that any residual human pathogens (eg Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp, etc.) that may reside on the surface of the avocado could potentially multiply during storage when submerged in water.”

As a weight loss coach who recognizes the value of this superfood for sustainable weight loss, my clients eat a LOT of avocados. So, as an avocado lover, how do you keep avocado fresh? This is the best way:

How to keep avocado fresh:

  1. Store ripe, uncut avocados in the freezer drawer.
  2. After slicing, keep the skin half unused
  3. Hold the intact well in the unused half
  4. to press plastic wrap directly on the pulp and store in the refrigerator

This method of storing avocados should allow them to last up to 2 weeks when stored whole and 2 days after slicing if properly stored in the refrigerator.

By the way, while you’re waiting for an avocado to ripen, keep it on the counter at room temperature. Refrigerating the avocado before it has had time to ripen can alter its flavor or texture when it finally ripens.

As mentioned above, avocado is a superfood. How? Although avocados are high in calories, they are packed with nutrients, are a rich source of antioxidants, and have been found to be beneficial for the heart and intestines.

Since avocados are high in fiber and healthy fats, adding half an avocado to your diet every day can help you feel full. Research shows that following a dietary pattern rich in fibrous foods, such as fruits and vegetables, can help with weight loss. And thanks to the versatility of the avocado, it is easier than ever to include it in your diet.

The serving size I recommend is 1/2 avocado, which is a serving of healthy fat. With more than that, I have seen my clients put on too much fat over the course of the day, resulting in the weight getting stuck and not moving.

Now you know how to (safely) keep avocado fresh, but remember: don’t follow nutritional advice from untrained strangers on the internet, and definitely don’t try salsa rosa.
