Meatloaf is one of those classic comfort foods that you really don’t want to give up when starting a healthy diet. But because it’s usually made with ground beef or a mix of ground beef, pork, and veal, meatloaf can be high in fat, calories, and sodium. Charming? Yes. Healthy? Not quite. Here’s the good news: With a few simple substitutions and your own air fryer, you can still enjoy all the things you love about meatloaf, including the savory flavor and tender texture, without completely sabotaging your weight loss journey.
A recipe for a healthier meatloaf
A quick substitution is to make a healthy turkey meatloaf! By using lean ground turkey instead of beef, for example, you can easily create a low-calorie meatloaf with the same taste and flavor as the “original.” This is the approach we have taken with this Homemade Turkey Meatloaf and the result was absolutely delicious. For a vegetarian version you can use crumbled walnuts or even lentils (watch out for these recipes…they’re coming soon!).
Here at The Leaf Weight Loss Blog, we have many great options for comfort food lovers looking to stay healthy. And now we are adding another to the list.
This air fryer meatloaf is one of our all-time favorite recipes. It tastes very, very similar to a traditional meatloaf because we use lean ground beef. The other ingredients (onions, eggs, breadcrumbs, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and black pepper) are also pretty standard.
While the ingredient list isn’t a turnoff, cooking it in an air fryer gives it a flavor and texture that is, in our opinion, a cut from classic meatloaf recipes. Which is pretty amazing considering cooking anything in a deep fryer is so easy.

How to make meatloaf in the air fryer
To make this air fryer meatloaf recipe, start by preheating your air fryer to 370 degrees Fahrenheit. As the air fryer heats up, it will combine all the ingredients except for a tablespoon of tomato sauce. Once the ingredients are well mixed, you’ll use your hands to shape the mixture into a nice loaf, then place it in the oiled air fryer basket. Then you will set the bread to bake for 15 minutes.
Once the 15 minutes are up, spread the remaining tablespoon of ketchup over the meatloaf and return it to the basket to cook for another 10 minutes. That is all! Your air fryer meatloaf is ready to enjoy. Be sure to let the meatloaf sit for 5-10 minutes before serving so it isn’t scalding hot.
We love to serve this meatloaf with an air fryer on busy weekday nights. Since it serves six servings, it’s a quick and easy dinner idea that’s great for family meals.
At the Leaf, we love the health benefits of whole grains. For this healthy meatloaf recipe, we’ll usually pair it with brown rice. We love mixing brown rice with cilantro and fresh squeezed lime juice. You can also try brown rice with parmesan, broccoli with cheese or roast Brussels sprouts for such a delicious and complete flexible meal, it’s hard to believe it’s healthy.
