THE BEST MUFFALETTA SANDWICH RECIPE

If you’ve ever visited New Orleans, chances are you’ve been introduced to this magnificent sandwich. This is a super easy recipe to make because it’s more or less the overlapping of a few ingredients. It’s perfect for a crowd. I say this recipe feeds 6, but you can definitely cut it into smaller slices to make it more of an appetizer. The combination of ingredients makes this one of the most delicious sandwiches you will ever put in your mouth!

FREQUENT QUESTIONS:

Muffaletta or Muffaletta?

The names are interchangeable and people spell it either way depending on where they come from, but both are acceptable spellings.

What does muffeta mean in Italian?

In Italian, Muffaletta translates to “molded.” In Italy, muffuletta refers to the bread itself (not the sandwich). This is the “molding” that contains the rest of the ingredients of the sandwich.

What is a Muffaletta?

It is a sandwich made with round Sicilian bread hollowed out and stuffed with cured meats, cheeses and a unique olive cream.

Should I use olive cream?

Yes, this is an essential part of the sandwich. You do not want to leave out the olive cream or it will not be an authentic Muffaletta Sandwich.

what is the “giardiniera”

One of the ingredients to make the muffuletta olive cream is the giardiniera. They are marinated and pickled vegetables. It is usually a mixture of cauliflower, carrots, bell peppers, and celery. You can usually find a jar of giardiniera near where the packaged olives are at your grocery store.

How long does it take to cool down?

This will need to chill for at least 4 hours, if not overnight, making this a great sandwich for any gathering.

How do I store leftovers?

This can be refrigerated in an airtight container or wrapped where it will keep for up to 5 days. I do not recommend freezing this recipe.
