We usually make tacos once a week and when I shared my birria tacos a lot of you did and loved it too! Then came our all-time favorite twist: Lamb Birria 🙂 If you love tacos, those are the best on the list to make NOW!

A super light dinner would be Air Fryer Fish For Air Fryer Fish Tacos. My favorite Mexican food would be the Fajita Bowl made with chicken, along with this MUST make Loaded Crunchwrap Supreme with Nacho Cheese Sauce recipe.

Now let’s talk tacos and salads and today’s stellar recipe!

Why Taco Salad Recipe?

This taco salad recipe is incredibly healthy and satisfying. It’s the perfect choice for days when you crave tacos but can’t make your own. Or when you want to prepare dinner in advance.

It’s super versatile that you can add or swap in your favorite ingredients and it would still taste so GOOD!

Many ingredients can be made ahead of time, like ground beef or lamb, which is the same one I used in this Crunchwrap Supreme. As well as the nacho cheese sauce recipe which is optional but very good!

This taco salad recipe is packed with so much protein that it makes for a pretty complete meal! Plus, you can make it vegetarian or even vegan so easily and enjoy all the nutritional goodness it has to offer.

Assembly literally takes a few minutes and that’s it!

So on peak days, this food feels good! And to make it healthy, tasty and high in protein, you can also add minced meat or lamb!

Taco Salad Ingredients

  • Ground beef or cooked lamb – I used the same in my popular Crunchwrap Supreme
  • Lettuce – I used romaine lettuce, coarsely chopped
  • Tomatoes – Any kind would work.
  • Corn –Fresh or frozen or even canned would work.
  • black beans – if canned, drain and rinse, or use as soon as cooked.
  • grated cheese o Nacho Cheese Sauce Recipe
  • Onions – diced
  • jalapenos -sliced
  • Avocado – diced
  • tortilla chips – With spices or natural, coarsely chopped
  • Cilantro – torn leaves

How to make Taco Salad

Simply put all of the above ingredients together including: some lettuce, tomatoes, cooked ground beef or lamb, cheese, corn, black beans, onions, jalapeños, and cilantro in a bowl.

Add your favorite fries for some crunch and your low carb, high protein salad is ready!

But wait! Don’t forget to sprinkle on some cream sauce!

Taco Salad Dressing

Will need

  • Sour Cream – You could use mayonnaise, but I find sour cream is creamier and fresher tasting.
  • sauce: don’t taste my homemade sauce
  • lime juice
  • Salt

You just have to mix everything and voila!

How to make a taco salad bowl

To finish the dish, generously sprinkle the seasoning over the dish. Mix them lightly and ta-da! Your creamy, protein-packed, goodness-packed bowl is ready to devour!

vegan taco salad

You can make the vegan version of this recipe even if you are vegan or vegetarian. All the ingredients remain the same for the vegan taco salad, but instead of ground beef or lamb you can use vegan meat and vegan cheese.

Fiesta Taco Salad

You also have the option to alternate some of the ingredients with lower fat versions to make it into the Fiesta Taco Salad. You can use reduced-sodium taco dressing instead of regular, and replace the cheese with low-fat sharp cheddar. For sour cream, you can use reduced-fat sour cream.

Layered Taco Salad Recipe

Now, if you’re making it for a potluck dinner or inviting guests over for dinner, you’ll definitely want a dish with some presentation. This is where the Layered Taco Salad Recipe comes in!

All you need is a serving plate. Simply layer the ingredients one by one on the plate. For example, place a layer of lettuce on the bottom, then a layer of tomatoes, followed by a layer of ground beef/lamb, and so on.

The result? A colorful and attractive layered dish that pleases the eye and tastes great.

Advice

  1. Always use lean ground beef because it is lower in fat, juicy, and cooks easily.
  2. Toss the salad just before serving. If you mix it first, the lettuce can wilt and lose its crunch from the dressing and seasoning.
  3. You can add mashed avocado or guacamole, broccoli, and other vegetables of your choice to the dish.

What do you serve with taco salad?

You can serve it with tortillas, French fries, beans or Mexican rice. But you can also have it alone as a bowl.

What is the difference between nachos and taco salad?

The taco salad includes lettuce and other vegetables that make it crunchy, while the dressing makes it creamy. So the vegetables are the highlight. As for the nachos, the tortilla chips on which the set is stacked are the main ingredient.

How do you eat taco salad?

You can eat it as a main dish or as a side dish. If you want to get creative, make a taco bar where you can organize all the ingredients in separate bowls so people can make their own taco salads based on their diet.

Can you refrigerate taco salad?

If you’ve made this recipe ahead of time, be sure to refrigerate the ingredients separately so the vegetables don’t lose their crunch. However, leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
